At 2325 m above sea level in the mountainous desert of the western Andes, we arrived at AREQUIPA. The city was totally destroyed by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in 1600. Despite these disasters, several 17th and 18th century buildings survived. Without doubt, the most interesting of these is the Monasterio de Santa Catalina.
