Mud Pools occur when steam (containg hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide) condenses into water near the soil surface. The resulting acidic soup eats away at surrounding rock turning it into a soft mud that bubbles and burps as more steam and gas tries to escape. Hydrogen sulphide gives the mud pools their distinctive 'rotten egg' smell.
